All about proteins

They may look cute, but kittens are natural carnivores and have evolved to depend on meat for the majority of their protein, with only a small amount coming from plants. They use up so much energy with all that running around that they need up to ten grams of protein per kilogram of their body weight for healthy growth. Adult cats only need about six grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, and humans about one.

What’s the point of proteins?

Bear with us for a few moments while we put on our science hats. As well as being cats’ preferred energy source, proteins are responsible not just for the growth, construction and renewal of body tissue, but also for the production of antibodies, enzymes and white and red blood cells. Proteins are made up of amino acids like taurine, which contributes to the proper functioning of the brain, plays an important role in eyesight function and is important for the heart and the nervous system. If your kitten isn't getting enough essential amino acids in her diet this can cause all sorts of problems for her, such as eye and heart disorders.

The importance of balance

Cats living in the wild get the protein they need by eating their prey. Since there's not much to hunt around the average home, domestic cats need an appropriate diet. The best your kitten can have is Whiskas® Kitten Pouches and Whiskas® Kitten Complete dry food, which ensure that she has all the protein she needs, including those essential amino acids we mentioned.
