Help! What do I do about fleas?
Fleas can be a real nuisance, but don't panic. It's difficult to know how bad the problem is - finding just one flea on your cat's coat may be a sign of a widespread infestation. Fleas can make your cat's life extremely unpleasant and although they are called "cat fleas" they aren't particularly choosy and will find other hosts, including you.
Fleas are small, brownish, jumping insects. You might see one in your cat's coat, but an easier sign to spot is the little black specks of flea faeces on her fur and skin. Prime areas to investigate are around your cat's head and ears, on the back of his neck, root of his tail and on his tail itself.
You'll be pleased to know that it's relatively easy to get rid of fleas. There are quite a few flea products available, but in all cases, it's important to follow the instructions on the container closely. The same goes for ones prescribed by your vet. These instructions are important, because the frequency of treatment may vary and can be critical to the outcome.
Remember that you should also treat the cat's environment, such as her bedding and favourite furniture, as well as the carpets in your house. This is because fleas spend a lot of time away from their host and you need to get rid of them wherever they might be hiding.
