How long do cats sleep?

Cats are naturally at their most active at dawn and dusk. Kittens and older adult cats tend to sleep even longer than adult cats and the average cat enjoys up to 16 hours sleep per day! Cats will sleep anyway and everywhere providing they feel safe and secure. They particularly like warm places where they can find peace and quiet. They may sometimes choose you to sleep on, in which case they expect you to sit still and quiet and simply provide a warm comfortable lap for the to snooze for as long as they wish! The sleeping positions cats choose are varied. A cat who is not fully relaxed may take a little nap whilst crouching with paws flat underneath ready to move if need be. Cats who are relaxed and secure in their environments can sleep in many different positions, varying from a classic curled up sleep on their side, to a full deep, very relaxed sleep on their backs stretching out, showing their tummies and sometimes twisting their bodies about! A relaxed happy cat will sleep where, when and how it chooses to!
