How do I make my new kitten feel at home?

    Settling in

New home, new smells, new everything—no wonder your kitten might want to hide in a box for a while. In this heartwarming episode of the Whiskas® Purrcast, Caspurr and Agnes explore how to help a kitten settle in.

Agnes is tucked away in a cardboard box (naturally), unsure about stepping into the big wide world. Luckily, Caspurr is on hand to gently guide her through why it’s okay to take things slow—and how every kitten needs time to adjust at their own pace.

From creating cosy hiding spots to giving your kitten space to explore in their own time, this episode is packed with helpful tips for making that first week feel calm and comforting. Whether it’s a favourite blanket, a quiet room, or just letting them come to you—Caspurr shares practical ways to build your kitten’s confidence (with a few playful interruptions from Agnes, of course).

Because feeling at home isn’t just about where you sleep—it’s about feeling secure, loved, and free to leap out of your box when you’re ready.

It’s a big day when you bring your new kitten home for the first time. Not only will their arrival enhance your life – it will change it too! Before your kitten arrives, make sure you have everything you need to help them settle in calmly and happily. If you have children, or another cat, then you’ll need to make careful and gentle introductions. If you take things steady to begin with, before long you’ll all be living happily together!

    Sshh!

After you’ve brought your kitten home, try to keep the house as quiet as possible. Don't be surprised if they seem a bit timid at first – they'll soon be overcome by their own curiosity! Just be patient, and wait for your kitten to come to you, rather than the other way around.

    Picking up your kitten

Early on, get your new little kitten used to being picked up. To begin with, gain their confidence by gently scooping them up, while supporting their back legs. Next, use one arm to support their weight – that way you can gently stroke them with your free hand. Your kitten’s independent spirit means that they like to be in control of their own movements, so as soon as they want to get down, let them go gently.

Introducing your kitten to other cats

If you already have a cat in your home, it’s important to handle introductions carefully. But don’t worry – there’s a simple trick you can use to make that first meeting with your new kitten go smoothly. Gently rub your new kitten with an old piece of your clothing – something that holds your smell. The familiar scent means your new kitten will be accepted more easily.

You should also make sure both cat and kitten keep their independence by giving them separate food bowls, beds and litter trays.
