Can kittens eat human food? It’s the age-old question—especially when your curious fluffball starts sniffing around your snack. In this playful episode of the Whiskas® Purrcast, our feline hosts Caspurr and Agnes tackle the topic head-on (with a side of sass and a suspicious-looking banana).
While Agnes seems pretty convinced that “Banooonaas” might be a kitten delicacy, Caspurr sets the record straight. Human food just isn’t made for kitten tummies—and in some cases, it can even be harmful. From confusing carbs to tiny tummies, our whiskered duo talk through why human treats are best kept for, well, humans.
Kittens are carnivores, and their nutritional needs are very different. Specially formulated kitten food is designed to support healthy growth and development—and no, it’s not just about portion size (though Caspurr definitely isn’t sharing his lunch).
Expect witty banter, gentle catsplaining and a clear message: just because your kitten wants to try your food, doesn’t mean they should.
Listen now to “Can Kittens Eat Human Food?” and get the facts on what should—and definitely shouldn’t—end up in your kitten’s food bowl. If you enjoyed this episode of Purrcast and want to understand what human food cats can eat, check out our full article below.
Cats are unique and have different nutritional requirements to humans. As ‘Obligate Carnivores’, meat is essential for their survival. Therefore, your cat’s daily diet must contain Taurine and other essential nutrients that are only found in meat. The Whiskas® range of cat main meal food includes dry food, and wet food coming in cans and pouches. They are all complete and balanced so you can feed your cat the food that is tailored to their life-stage and be confident that they are getting all the nutrients they need in just the right amounts.
Can cats drink milk?
After kittens are weaned, they lose their ability to digest milk – contrary to popular belief, cats should not be given cow's milk to drink! However, at Whiskas, we know that owners like to treat their cats to something special so we’ve created a safe version of milk that cats love.
Can cats eat cheese?
We know that some owners like to treat their cats with cheese, but this is not advisable as cats are in fact lactose-intolerant. Their digestive system cannot process dairy foods, and the result can be digestive upset and diarrhoea.
Some varieties of Whiskas® cat treats include cheese as a flavour variety, where the lactose has been removed so they are safe for cats to eat.
Some human foods that are perfectly safe for us to eat can be highly toxic and dangerous for cats, so be sure never to let your cat eat any of the following:
- Chocolate
- Grapes
- Raisins
- Caffeine
- Onions
- Garlic
- Xylitol
If your cat does consume any of these things, please seek veterinary attention immediately.
