Bringing home prey

Like all big cats who live in the wild, your adorable little kitten is actually a formidable hunter. Hunting and catching prey is a big part of their natural behaviour, so there’s a good chance that your feline friend will sometimes like to bring their prey home.

Keeping hold

The main reason your kitten brings prey back home is to finish their hunt. When they first catch their prey, your kitten will grab it anywhere on its body that they can. To kill it, they need bite its neck, but they can’t let go of their prey to do this because they've got no pack to stand guard while they do so.

Instead of adjusting their grip in the place where they caught the prey, your kitten carries it back home instead. That way, if the prey should happen to escape, they'll be much more confident about catching it again.

Little presents on the doorstep

When your kitten turns up on the doorstep carrying something they've caught, it’s tempting to think they've brought you a gift. In fact, your little hunter is simply following their natural instincts by finishing their hunt in a place where they feel safe, and where they won’t be disturbed by other predators.
